As we get older, our bodies undergo various changes. One common issue among older adults is the loss of balance due to changes in blood pressure, medications, a neurological condition or weakened muscles, to name a few.

We often realize that our elderly loved ones may be better off in a setting where they can be looked after around the clock and be kept safe from falls. But what if your loved one continues to experience multiple falls?

The leading cause of injury deaths

In the United States, there is a strong correlation between falls and mortality in people 65 and older. Older adults have less bone density and are more likely to fracture a bone. Previously active adults are prone to deteriorating health after a fracture due to limited mobility and long healing times.

For the estimated 2 million adults taking a blood thinner, hitting their head in a fall can result in bleeding in the brain.

Fall prevention should be a top concern for nursing homes, so why do some experience a high rate of resident falls? Here are some common causes of falls in a long-term care setting:

  • Unsafe environments, such as slippery floors, inadequate lighting, clutter and crowded walkways
  • Insufficient supervision
  • Unmet medical needs
  • Faulty assistive equipment

If your loved one is experiencing frequent falls at their nursing home, you must discuss your concerns with the Director of Nursing and Administrator. Get specific details about the circumstances surrounding the falls.

Every nursing home should have a personalized care plan for each resident. Review the plan to see if it’s addressing your loved one’s fall risk. If you’re not satisfied that the nursing home is providing proper care, you may want to look for alternative placement. It’s also crucial to inform the Georgia Department of Community Health so they can conduct a proper investigation.

If your loved one has suffered a serious injury from a fall and you believe the nursing home was at fault, you may want to consider pursuing a personal injury lawsuit. Compensation can help cover medical expenses and physical therapy.
