Could an elderly loved one be raped by their caregivers?

On Behalf of | Dec 23, 2024 | Nursing Home Neglect

While it seems impossible to even contemplate such a fate for someone in such a vulnerable position, the answer is that they can be and some have been sexually abused by those hired to care for them.

TIME did a story on the sexual abuse of one of the most vulnerable populations — those in nursing homes with dementia.

How can that happen?

Sexual predation covers all groups, and just as child molesters surround themselves with children they groom, predatory “caregivers” seek jobs where they can abuse those with dementia who have lost the ability to speak.

Even those who have retained the ability to voice their concerns, their accusations often are dismissed and disbelieved due to their diagnoses of dementia. Some predators were accused as many as three times, yet retained their jobs and were only stopped when caught in the act by a co-worker. Another was caught after a resident developed genital herpes.

Men are at risk, too, of sexual violation and/or humiliation. One man feared for his life and was forced to commit unspeakable acts by his tormentors.

What can you do to protect your loved one?

If your parent, grandparent or other loved one complains of being sexually abused in their nursing home, give them the gift of believing them. Arrange for an independent physician who is unaffiliated with the facility to examine them.

You can also hide a small camera in the room to record any abusive activity. Being their advocate at such a time is a kindness and can stop the abuse from ever occurring again.
